For the record I'm told that it is possible to use Disk Utilities in OSX . You need to check the option box to include OS 9 drivers on the disk. It would be good to know if you did this and it didn't work. As this is untested second hand info.

Will,

A few months back I purchased an external USB/Firewire case and laptop drive to use for transporting info between work and home. I had a lot of initial problems with the drive: using it on the iMac FP running OS 10.2 at the shop, a G3 Laptop running OS 10.2, and the UMAX C600 and the 9600 at home, both running OS 9.1 I finally formatted the drive using Disk Utilities in OSX, checking the box to include OS9 drivers on the disk. It now plays nicely with all of our systems, at least when connected via USB. (I still have some FireWire connection issues)

I have not put a system folder on the external drive. At this point, it would not make much difference, as the only thing it could boot is the iMac.

The most interesting thing I discovered about Disk Utilities in OSX has to do with Zip Disks. Prior to getting the external drive for transporting work home, I was using Zip Disks. I was having all sorts of problems with disks not being readable in the 9600 and C600 (OS 9.1) that had been in the iMac (OS 10.2) I got the usual "this disk is not readable..." or worse: the click of death sound from the Zip drive in the 9600 and C600. After erasing all the Zip disks using OSX's Disk Utilities I no longer have problems with readability or click of death noises.

Nancy
