Snip
Yesterday or the day before, my S900 started making a humming sound that seems
to get randomly louder and softer, faster and slower.

Does this sound like the power supply fan? Does the S900 typically have any
other fans, on the processor or anything? Or anything else that would make such
a noise? No CDs are in the optical drives, and I'd assume that if the hard
drives were sounding this weird I wouldn't be able to type this.

Am I tempting fate by letting it run?

Usually fans make a whining sound when they go out (like a failing bearing).
Try dusting your case and applying oil to your fans.

If the humming sound is coming from your power supply, I strongly recommend that
you replace your power supply immediately, as the humming is probably the
windings on your power supply's transformer rattling at 60Hz or harmonics
thereof. Usually the next thing to happen is a filter capacitor or transformer
is destroyed (makes a loud popping sound followed by a sizzle, smoke, and
burning smell), and when the power supply fails in that manner it usually takes
the system board with it. I've seen this happen to several Dell PC's at my old
school, and their solution was to have Dell repair them under warranty.
Obviously that isn't going to work for you.

My S900 is humming too, so it's staying off pending me doing an ATX supply
conversion.
