I have used iMovie 2.03 with my S900 quite successfully (G4/400 MHz
Newertech card) on OS 9.1 and 9.2.2 (may have even used it on 8.6 but can't
remember that far back). It's an excellent program - even though I have
Final Cut Pro (and Premiere), I still use iMovie for basic editing as it's
just so quick and easy to use. There are a couple of caveats with regard to
working with DV in general on the S900's however.

I found out the hard way that not all Firewire PCI cards are created equal.
Originally bought an Orange Micro FW card and had problems with blocky video
and/or dropouts, both when importing and exporting video. OM tech support
made several suggestions such as upgrading the processor (I had the original
200 MHz 604e at the time). After making substantial investments in upgrades
(G4/400 processor, Initio Miles UW SCSI card and UW drives, 784MB RAM) and
experimenting with slot positions, the card still never worked properly
while exporting DV back to the camera, so after a year of diddling around, I
did some research. It seems that the cards made with the Texas Instrument
chip set were significantly faster than the NEC (what the OM card used) or
VIA chip sets.

So, I ordered a VST Firewire/USB card and bingo! ... everything worked like
a charm ... well, almost. The machine was still picky about what drives it
would record to/play back from without dropping frames. For example, I have
problems with dropped frames while capturing video to the external Seagate
UW drives (Initio Miles UW card), but not to the Seagate 9 GB attached to
the slower (10MB/sec) internal SCSI bus ... go figure. Playback would is
fine from the external drives, however, so my work flow is to capture to the
internal drive, copy the media files over to the larger external drives and
edit/output on those. I seem to recall this was only an issue with Final Cut
Pro and/or Premiere though - iMovie would capture fine onto the external
SCSI drives.

A recent addition has been an OWC Mercury Elite 80GB FW drive. If I try to
capture video direct from the camera to it (using iMovie) the computer locks
up the computer completely - more than likely a PCI timing issue. Playback
and export are fine from it however. No problem, I just use the work flow as
above.

Post-script: I had a recent power problem that took out my VST FW/USB card
and 9GB internal media drive. Am waiting patiently for the arrival of an ADS
Dual Link FW/USB card from eCost and watching with great interest the recent
"ATA Card Compatibility" thread, as I'm seriously contemplating going this
route to replace the media drive.

Hope this long-winded post helps out ...;).

FYI, here is a great link to a chart and info on FW chipsets used by various
card makers:
