A recent addition has been an OWC Mercury Elite 80GB FW drive. If I try to
capture video direct from the camera to it (using iMovie) the computer locks
up the computer completely - more than likely a PCI timing issue. Playback
and export are fine from it however. No problem, I just use the work flow as
above.

Won't hurt to give this a try.
If you happened to format the drive with Hard Disk Speed Tools, use the control
panel for firewire throughput
and drop it down one notch.
I'm not a hairsplitting speed demon with a stopwatch, but it hasn't affected
the write/read speeds noticeably and haven't had any problems.
I use my external firewire drive (a EZQuest Cobra+ 60gb) for temporary storage
of photoshop files before they are burned and also for dragging over the System
folder for backing up.
Not sure which chip the MachFire card uses, but thanks for mentioning the
'chiap factor.'
