Grr. I went for years without this kind of thing happening, and now... So, here's the status. Alan kindly reminded me to turn off conflicting extensions, which I had figured (in the abstract) was probably where the issue was. Trouble is, A) I can't tell by how they're named which extensions relate to the CD-ROM drive (aside from the obvious ones), and B) the only one that I can see is a CD-ROM extension aside from the FWB which I guess is supposed to be on, is the Apple CD/DVD driver. But that one was on before, so it doesn't seem likely to me to be the culprit now. But I did turn it off, which made no difference. So I turned it back on.
Also, there's a second message that I forgot to include below. It comes up when I try to run anything from a CD. It's labeled CD-ROM ToolKit Reports, and it reads, "The file 'FWB CD-ROM Cache File' could not be used correctly. Low free disk space or high fragmentation of your chosen drive? Please delete it, and re-start." So I delete it but it won't leave the trash because it says the item is in use. So I restart, then empty the trash, then re-start again. All this because I'm trying to boot from the Norton CD so's I can optimize the new HD. What a pain. There are days I wish I could be a Luddite but they're a little too liberal for New Hampshire. As always, any thoughts welcome. Bill, who wishes he could stop asking questions of the list. Howdy, I'm afraid I'm back. I dunno if this relates to the HD installation I completed last night or the game installation that followed. But: I can't boot from the CD now. I hold down the C key while it's starting, and when I get to the CD-ROM portion I get the following message: "CD-ROM ToolKit will not be able to support one of your CD-ROM drives because it is already handled by another CD-ROM driver. You should disable the conflicting extension or use the CD-ROM ToolKit Application to de-select the drives in conflict." I click OK and things go on as usual except the CD-ROM drive icon has a question mark as it goes by in the boot process. What I'm trying to do is boot from the Norton CD (which I have done happily in the past) in order to clean up the new HD after its installation. I also can't find anything called CD-ROM ToolKit, and I don't think there were any extensions the game installed but I could be way wrong there. So what's this all about?
