I only skimmed through several msgs in this thread but here goes.

Disregarding all info about hacking and substituting the CD drive
extensions....

In general,
Norton Utilities disc itself will not work on many of the Umax factory Matshita
drives.
Umax system CD containing will boot the machine afterwhich the included Norton
can be used.

One workaround is to copy the system folder onto a SCSI external Zip drive disc
and force boot from that.
Just need to make sure it is the FWB extension for the CD that is active.
Then you can load the Norton utilities CD on the internal drive and run it.
