Alan,

Hacking the Apple CD/DVD extension with ResEdit does
work. 

I did it last night and I was able to get my Umax
s900, 9.1, to recognize a Mats CR-508 CDROM drive that
was not apple native.

I've had that problem with the "cache" warning with my
original S900 cdrom when i upgraded the machine to OS
8.x and then I got it to go away when I bought an
apple 12x scsi drive and got rid of the original S900
drive.
