Yes, the reports I saw rated Mitsui media as having the lowest block error
rates amongst all the tested brands. In particular, they are prized for
creating quality Red Book audio CDs. I've also had great results with Kodak
Gold (very similar to the Mitsui). For data, the Verbatim DataLifePlus are
very reliable and reasonably priced, and their CD-RWs are the only ones that
seem to work reliably in my Yamaha 4416.

The basic reasoning is the same for DVD disks. Like in the early days of CD
technology, some media is more compatible than others with certain machines.
I remember some of the early CD burners (back when they were around $1000)
being particularly finicky about what media they liked. As the technology
improves, we'll probably see less of this incompatibility.

Another issue is longevity and durability. Some of the budget brands may
work OK, but tend to have a thinner protective coating which makes them more
prone to scratches and resulting data loss.
