My kids keep pushing me off my computer to do their thing, so I pulled an old PowerComputing PowerBase 240 out of the closet and powered it up. Everything is fine there. My S900 has an ethernet port and the PowerBase has an ethernet card so I have been trying to connect the two together. I've got 4 ethernet cables, one is a crossover cable but I don't know which. And I've got a 10base-T 4 port ethernet hub. I set my AppleTalk to connect by ethernet on both computers and the computers can see each other, however, when I go to the chooser and try to OK the connection, the S900 will either crash or chooser will quit. And on the powerbase, the drives on the S900 aren't listed for me to connect to. I've tried connecting directly from one ethernet port to the other, and I've also tried running the cables in and out of the ethernet hub.
Then I thought OK I would connect with appletalk through the printer ports. I've got the little ethernet boxes connected to printer cable plugs on one end, and then I run standard phone cord between the computers. Actually I run one of those to my Personal laserwriter 320 and from there to the other computer. I set the AppleTalk to connect through the printer port and again the computers see each other but I get similar results as when I tried to connect through the ethernet. I can print from either computer to the PLW 320 when connected this way.
I've done lots of these networks over the years, but not for a couple of years now. Am I forgetting something? It always seemed so simple before.
P.S. How can I recognize which cable is the crossover cable?
I will chew on any bones that are tossed in my direction.
Thanks in advance,
Bob Robeson
