It's been a while since I helped set up a network at the studio down the
street.
Basically as Nancy suggested, it is best to use a hub instead of messing
with a crossover cable.

I do recall it did matter which computer was started first and if the other
way around, they couldn't see each other.

Instead of boinging up both at the same time, try one after another.
