The software may be misreporting that to say there are 12 slots, but the
16MB on the logic board *should* be recognized as at least two slots (it
might have been set up as four, but I can't recall).  The purpose for this
was interleaving.  Yep, even those 16MB on the board are interleaved.  This
would ensure that as long as you did everything right in the 8 DIMM slots at
your disposal, you could maintain 100% interleaved memory of every megabyte,
all the way from megabyte Zero to megabyte 1,040.

It seemed pretty cool at the time.
