Yes this is true of all Sonnet Tempo cards except for the ATA 66 which is really a ACARD. ACARD/ SGII are the ones which don't have the first 8 GB issue. From: Gregg Gorrie <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Sonnet ATA133 issues Date: Thu, 04 Mar 2004 12:05:37 -0800 Hi folks:
I thought I had been paying attention to the significant amount of postings
last fall re: the ATA card upgrade path and various issues surrounding
certain cards (a quick look at my archive shows there was still some
uncertainty). At any rate, I decided to pick up a Tempo ATA133 as I need the
extra drive space with the new Mac OSX install and apps.
Some disappointing problems I thought this card wouldn't have:
1) It does appear to have the "first 8GB" requirement for OSX install.
2) I have not been able to boot OS9.1 installed on it.
I know of no issues with this card booting OS 9.1 thaat would have to do with the ATA card unless the card is defective. Most likely something wrong with the install or a driver or extension conflict.
3) Attached my Pioneer A05 DVD-R drive to the card and it locks up theI have the same DVD drive works great OS 9 or X using an older Sonnet/Acard ATA 66 card but others have had good luck with both ACARD and Sonnet 100 & 133 cards. I'm even using a deskstar 80gb drive but new enough it's marked Hitachi.
computer with the gray screen while booting (similar to a SCSI ID or
termination issue). I tried something a little risky and hooked up the DVD-R
to the card just as I was booting from XPost Facto into OSX and the drive
was recognized! - in fact, I was able to back up my entire OSX partition
using Retrospect. Unfortunately, I don't want to do this every time I boot
from XPost Facto into OSX (probably >not< a good idea).
Anyone have some suggestions?
(PS the drive is an 80GB IBM Deskstar formatted with OS9.2.2 drive setup in
my S900).

This may well be your mistake. You likely need to format the drive using drive setup from OS 9.1 for both OS 9 & OSX.( I say likely since I'm not sure 9.2.2 doesn't work) OSX will not boot and run correctly if drive is formated using OSX utilities on an Old World Machine like ours. Also OS 9.2.2 you need to start with OS 9.1 format install then use OS 9 helper to install 9.2.2 . Some people love 9.2.2 and others find it buggy on our machines. I find it buggy but since I no longer use OS 9 I haven't taken the time to iron out the issues. hope this helps Will S
