Okay- have you repaired permissions? Do you have DiskWarrior for OSX? That's where I would go. There are other people on this list wiser than me in OSX and hopefully will jump in. One of the things that I have a recollection (vague) of is a setting in the XPostFacto CP to slow down the start up so slower discs can get up to speed. I may have that wrong. I have had the "waiting for local disks" message from time to time. I use DiskWarrior whenever there's any sign of trouble-which isn't anywhere as often as when I was using OS9. Repairing "permissions" using the OSX disk utility is something that needs to be done regularly.
