Hi Bill,
Each ide cable on your machine can handle two ide hard drives. One has to
be set to Master and the other to Slave. (Some Western Digital drives, and
possibly others, may require CS {Cable Select}) On the end of the drive
where the ide cable plugs in, you will see the jumper pins referred to by
Paul. Most newer drives will have initials in (microscopic) writing
underneath the pins: DS-Master, SL-Slave, and CS-Cable Select. You just put
the jumper over the appropriate pins. Hopefully your drive will have this
or a diagram on top of the drive itself. Or as Paul mentioned, you may need
to go to the mfgs web site, hopefully not.
Once you figure the pins out, if you install only one drive AS MASTER,
connect it to the end connector of the cable. If you connect two drives,
connect the Master drive to the end connector and the Slave drive to the
first connector closest to the card. Master at the end of the cable will be
the first device detected.
