Hi List-<snip>
Yesterday I installed Panther (upgraded from 10.2.8). I was successful with the first disc- I used XpostFacto, which is really cleverly improved, and two things happened. On the restart, at the conclusion of the install I got hung up with the gray screen w/gray apple. I tried to restart a couple of times and then figured the start up might just want a lot of time...I left it for a couple of hours. When I came back it was still hung.
Dan,
Maybe I do not understand exactly what happened to you, but if it was similar to my first attempt at putting Panther on an old world Mac, I know at least one potential misstep and how to correct it. When I finished with the first CD and was prompted to restart, I assumed it would simply do so. But what you have to do at that point is restart and hold down the <option> key so that you start up in OS 9. Then you tell XPostFacto you want to start up from the volume you've just (partially) installed 10.3 on. If you can successfully boot up on that disk, you will be prompted to load the second CD (and, later, possibly the third one). For Panther, people have had success with one of the XPostFacto version 3's (not 2).
The latest - 3a15 - is at:

To be clear: when you first installed, you told XPostFacto you were booting from an install CD with a destination of the internal ATA. Now what you need to do is say you are booting from the ATA. The CD doesn't even have to be loaded. You can do that after you've successfully booted. Hope this helps.
