Hi. I'm new to the list.
I have an S900 (though I'm wondering if I should've
just bought a DT G3 300 for the same price).
I had to buy the S900 to replace the J700 I had before
because the motherboard died (and took my 18GB Seagate
hard drive with it). The G3 Processor card (Sonnet
Crescendo) works great.
The machine I have now came with Mac OS 8.6, and I
successfully upgraded it to 9.1.
Here's the problem.
When I deleted the previous system folder, I
unwittingly deleted the CD Toolkit extension (the one
that mounts CDs for a non-Apple CD-Rom).
So not only can I not mount CDs, but I can't boot from
my System 9.1 disk.
Of course, this gets worse.
Since I wasn't able to find a copy of CD-ROM Toolkit,
I decided to go searching for alternatives. Since I
wasn't able to find an updated driver for my Panasonic
CR-508, I stumbled upon a res edit hack, in which I
could hack the Apple CD/DVD extension to work with any
drive. (the article was at resexcellence.com).
I made a copy of the extension, hacked the copy, moved
the original to another folder, and renamed the copy
to the original and restarted.
Needless to say, all hell broke loose.
The S900 loads up fine. Then I get the dialog "The
startup disk you have chosen will not work with this
Macintosh model."
And since I don't have an OEM CD-ROM drive, I feel
like my computer's a 28 lb doorstop.
Did my stupidity just cost me a really decent
computer?
Any input would be great.
