How about disconnecting the HD from the SCSI chain. If it can't see it, it can't boot from it. Put the CD in the drive and see what happens. OBTW, how is the SCSI termination set up? SCSI IDs on the chain? Termination errors show up in very unlikely places. Are you using a SCSI port off of the motherboard or off a PCI card?
