hi,
so i'm finally looking to upgrade my hard drive/controller in my S900.
the general specs are:
MaxPowr g4/400 upgrade
648 MB RAM
USB/FW card (#1)
radeon 7000 (#2)
9gb seagate scsi on internal bus
from what I can tell looking through the archives, i have a few options.
Serial ATA:
Sonnet Tempo Serial ATA 2-Port Serial ATA PCI Card
http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6283&Item=STITSATA
FirmTek SeriTek/1S2 Serial ATA/150 Dual Channel Mac PCI Controller
http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6164&Item=FTKFTST1S2
ACARD AEC-6290M, the 2-Channel SATA Adapter
http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6490&Item=ACDAEC6290M
or ATA/133:
SIIG Ultra ATA/133 PCI Interface any PowerMac
http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=4348&Item=SIISCMP4A12
Sonnet Tempo ATA/133 PCI Host Adapter Card w/Cable
http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=4797&Item=STITAT133
ACARD ATA-133 --- AEC-6280M PCI Ultra ATA-133 IDE Adapter
http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=3854&Item=ACDAEC6280M
the sonnet or sigg ata/133 cards seem popular, but i've read conflicting reports about
whether they need to be in the top two slots. if so i have a problem since i have a
radeon 7000 card and a usb/firewire card already sitting there.
i also would like to know if there is any real benefit in serial ATA versus ATA/133 in
our machines. immediately, i plan on dropping in an older WD 30gb hard drive i have
(ATA/66) but since it's only 5400 rpm (i pulled it from a dysfunctional firewire
case), wondering if i should just pony up another $90 and get a 7200 rpm 80GB drive.
opinions? thanks much.
.christopher
ps: i have an ATTO UW SCSI card (PCI express) in perfect condition which i can't use
in os-x. anyone want to trade the ATTO for an ATA card? ATTO works great in OS9.
