Hi all,

I've been lurking for a while and checking through the archives so I could try extending the useful life of my S900 for a bit more. I just want to make sure I've got everything straight before I begin.

Current config:
S900 running OS 9.1
XLR8 MACh Carrier G3 366MHz
SCSI bus 0 = Quantum Fireball ST2.1 (system disc), Matshita CD ROM CR506, Seagate SX15150n 4GB
SCSI bus 1 = IBM DCAS32160 2GB, Matshita CDR CW7502, Iomega Zip 100
PCI - tt128M video, Emagic Audiowerks 8, XLR8 firewire and USB cards

1. Will the G3/366MHz have enough horsepower?

Yes it will though as you likely know no such thing as too fast ;-) I ran OSX development and beta versions with my 604e 233 MHz and it was usable. OSX 10.1.5 was the last version which worked with the 604e. OSX lowers your machine feel/ speed apox 50 -75 MHz compared to OS 9.x
2. OS 10.2 or OS 10.3? I only ask 'cause I have the 10.2 discs in hand...
Unless your getting a free copy of Panther go with Jaguar since you already have it. Jagaur OSX 10.2 is my all time favorate Mac OS. I do have Panther on a disk. It was a real pain to get setup correctly and isn't all that great with SCSI drives even on a new Mac. The changes from Jaguar are small and mostly cosmetic. It is a bit faster and more refined perhaps.
3. SCSI bus 1 will be unusable, correct? So I need to internally mount whatever I want to keep from that bus? I'm a little unclear about how OS X will deal with the S900 SCSI stuff.
Jaguar works fine with SCSI. Problems are mostly with doing the install on a SCSI disk. Some people who have issues have found moving the SCSI cable to the external SCSI bus lets them do teh install and first boot . You usually can then move the cable back to the faster internal bus . Not everyone has this issue.
3. I'll need a different CDRom than the stock CR506 correct? Can I use the CW7502 or does it have to be Apple branded?
The CR506 may work fine. If you have problems with it most likely the install will be the problem rather then use after the install. My CD 508 (24X)works like a charm in Jaguar.
4. I plan to leave OS9 where it is and install a ST339918 (Barracuda) to hold OS X - that needs to be formatted from the OS X cdrom yes?
No, a very common mistake is to formate using OSX . It then will either not let you install or will install but not boot. You need to format using Disk Setup in OS 9.x .
5. Replace video card (re. current thread on video cards)

The twin turbo video card may work fine in OSX or the color maybe off a bit. Not easy to give an answer. Most people who talk about the twin turbo working or not seem to think all the twin turbos are equal. Nothing could be more mistaken. There are more versions of the twin turbo then most of us can keep track of ! iMicro made special versions of the card for every company who bought them it seems. There are 2 mb cards that can be upgraded to 4mb and ones that can't be upgraded. 4mb cards and 8 mb cards. Then to make things fun all of these come in Apple and non Apple firmware versions. The Apple firmware are perhaps the best cards in many ways and easy to spot. They have the Apple monitor port only. The other versions have Apple and vga ports. The Apple cards run using the drivers built into the Mac OS . The other cards use the twin turbo drivers and control panel in OS 8/9 . They also have what is called sync on green which was needed for monitors no longer made and the software controls turning it off and on. No software was ever made for OSX so you end up with a green cast screen. But wait some cards have jumper pins to control sync on green but only some. Confused yet and more then you wanted to know ;-) ? So it will likely work and if you have the right card the picture will be fine! (the Apple cards don't have the sync on green issue)
Am I missing anything else?

A PCI ATA add on card with low cost ide hard drive is a great add on and way faster then the older SCSI drives. later Will S

Thanks in advance for the advice and assistance,

Joe.
