I recall the "modem only" selection in AppleTalk control panel. This allowed the connection and use of both a modem and printer without getting the maddening notices saying only one or the other is available. I also recall the confusion between AppleTalk and the Chooser settings, but once things were stabilized it stayed that way for many years up to the day when DSL came along. Always used GlobalVillage (external) modems because they were always known for being Mac friendly.
