I don't know what happened there - everything went fine here.

I might be casting an eye at the install CD - any way of trying to boot it
on a Mac that's capable of booting it natively?

That's not really the best time to wrestle with installing a new OS - the
whole process takes a couple of hours.

Get it booting into OS9 first.
