Hey Jeff, well I guess if I can "identify the romchip" then I may or may not succeed here
I went to the Radeon Forum at OWC to "brush up" and the task seems kinda daunting
but will see ... by the way ... I bought a cheap PC recently for just such a task so ... Phillip

Just adding my 2 cents ;-)
The web page supplied by Leon is one of the nicest i've seen for flashing the 7000 card. Having said that i do take issue with some of the info.
ie. the info on how to do the flashing is out of date. It is the original 2 step method requiring flashing on a PC then flashing again on a Mac. It will work fine if all goes well but is more work then the current 1 step flash on the PC. I have only worked with flashing the Sapphire and Power Color cards. I do know that a number of people have used Visiontek cards for flashing to Mac. They were however 9100 cards using a different ROM file. Visiontek 7000 DDR cards must be a new thing. They weren't making any last time I checked but it's been months. Make sure you are getting DDR RAM and not SDRAM which doesn't work on a Mac. I just checked the link at Microcenter and it lists the card as DDR/SDRAM! Very odd it can't be both and SDRAM won't work.
You can not always tell which flash chip you are getting by looking at the card. Up until apox Dec 2003 all cards were marked as having the smaller M25P05-AV chip. However they had to be mismarked as they were clearly the larger chip as the 128k ROM installed fine! At some point the cards started having correctly marked chips which no longer worked with the 128k ROM. The good news is there are now smaller ROM files available for flashing on the smaller flash chips. People report they work fine. It does seem the ST chips are likely better for long term use then the AT chips. As Jeff said the AT chips are no good for firmware upgrades on the Mac if one should be offered in the future.
I have the files needed for one step flashing on a PC and also have the smaller ROM files for the smaller Flash chips. The way of doing it is the same as the info on the site provided by Leon only just one step on the PC and using different ROM files.
I would like to know what Jeff W thinks of the "screw driver soldering" the guy does on the listed website ;-)
Hope this helps rather then clouds the issue. Will S
