Hi all,
I'm still using 9.1 on a J700 as our primary computer. The internet connection is through a cable modem.
I'd like to know how to use the original Airport base station M7601LL/B with
the cable modem so I could still have a working direct ethernet connection
with the J700 and also the capability to use a newer airport equipped G4
laptop to access the net with the wireless connection via the base station.
The base station has 1 ethernet port and 1 modem port.

Perhaps you can introduce a wired router, let's say a 4-port, and keep your J700 wire-connected via the router.
Connect the airport to one of the router ports for serving any OS-X machines.
As for the actual configuration of the airport itself for different situations, I found good information posted at Apple's tech info section.
Not sure if a OS 9 machine can make use of the airport ethernet port.
