Removing the software Amazing Slow Downer didn't do it, as well as trying to connect the audio out of the Mac CD ROM drive to the Umax motherboard: the cable is still there, but the CD drive has a 4 pin out while the plug of the cable wants to see 3 pins :-)
Maybe the CD-ROM drive that Newsell here in Germany is offering could do the trick?
