Hi,
I have an S900 connected to an AppleVision 17" monitor running OS9.1 with a Radeon
7000 Mac Edition video card. This morning I turned on the machine and the monitor
diaplay is black except for a thin vertical strip of light. Has it reached the end of its life,
or is this a known problem. I have electronics experience so if it is a known faulty
component I could have a go at fixing. Any advice greatly appreciated.
The vertical strip of light is a pretty good indicator that a component in your monitor bit the big one. Some of Apple's 17" monitors were notoriously unreliable (the models right after the "17" Color Display", which was just like the 16" Color Display but with multi-resolution instead of fixed at 832 X 624).
Given the low price of brand new 17" monitors these days it probably isn't worth fixing in purely economic terms. If you want to give it a try anyway, I'd do a dejanews advanced news group search with comp.sys.mac.* or comp.sys.mac.hardware.* in the news group field, your monitor identified somehow in the subject field and for the first search, I'd look for Steve or Steven Bell as the author. He used to frequent those groups and provide great monitor repair advice. I know the fellow only from his postings, not personally, but I gather that he is or was in the business of repairing monitors in the UK.
