hi, dan -
i've been using panther and still learning the quirks of the system.
without reading your post thoroughly, i'd like to mention how documents end up in the documents folder (i think by default) under the user's area.
for instance, you can click on the hard drive icon and when the finder window opens, you see a documents folder.
however, you will also see a registered user's icon which the person can access when logged on.
click on that and there is another documents folder...
there are several security layers one must get past and have to have authorized access as a logged on user.
my wife couldn't find a Word presentation document she had been working on the other day.
since she was logged on to the machine, i did a Command F and found it in 'her' documents folder because she hadn't designated it to be saved at a specific place, or that's my understanding.
anyway, this is one thing about X (or Panther) that i find noticeably different from 9.
but i'm not a power user and there's probably tons more that i haven't encountered.
so....sometimes things can be buried/hidden.
i need to do a test on a Command F to see if an item will show up if i'm looking for someone else's stuff while logged on under my password.
maybe the document will show but not allow viewing ?
not sure how you have yours set up.
