Hi,
Sounds like a good way to test OS X on an s900 withoput making too large an investement.

Could you please explain how this works:

I use XPostFacto and a helper volume to boot into a volume on my FW drive
that has Panther. I do maintenance and backups, then use XPF to point
back to my main S900 volume.

i.e. what is a helper volume and does this live on the S900
how is XPF used to go from the s900 volume to the FW volume and back.

In a nutshell: What XPostFacto does when you boot from an internal hard disk is to write versions of BootX and other files where the initial booter expects them. These files fool the booter into thinking you are booting from a supported machine. Then, at some point, control is turned over to the normal OS X files that are on the volume you are booting to.

If you want to boot into an external (FW) drive or a CD, the XPF interface allow you to declare a "helper volume". This is a volume on an internal drive where BootX and its buddies are written. You start out booting with these files, but eventually get redirected to the normal OS X files on the actual external or CD volume.

When I've booted into a FW external or CD and am ready to boot back unto the internal HD, I bring up XPF and this time point to the internal volume with no helper volume declared.

For the full explanation, see:

 Jacqueline,

I imagine there are combinations of Firewire cards and other slot
allocations for which it would *not* work, but I can tell you that
 it
is possible to boot into Panther on a Firewire drive attached to an
S900. That is how I do regular maintenance and backups on mine.

I have an OWC (single-purpose) Firewire card in slot 4. I use
XPostFacto and a helper volume to boot into a volume on my FW drive
that has Panther. I do maintenance and backups, then use XPF to
 point
back to my main S900 volume.

 I'd say go for it.

 All the best,
 Gary
