hi michael,
have had the card for a few years so it may be too late to send it back.
The list has always reported problems with this card in an s900. Curious
to know how it has fared in a 9500/9600 and can these motherboards fit
into a s900 case?

If we're still discussing the G4/800 another issue it has is that it doesn't work with the Atto UL2D (or was that the 3D? quick trip to ASP, it's the UL2D). Of course, that's not a problem if you've gone ATA.

The 9500/9600 board will have several fit issues in an S900 case. The 9500/9600 has its own set of quirky power supply connections and I doubt that you can fit a 9500 or 9600 (they're different) power supply in the S900 case gracefully. There is at least one article on XLR8yourmac.com describing how to adapt an ATX PS to a 9500 or 9600. And you can definitely fit an ATX power supply in the S900 case.

The other issue is that the rear I/O ports just aren't going to line up anything like they should. It isn't just a matter of the holes being different. They're in the wrong places to easily adapt.

A PowerTower Pro board is a much better candidate for adaptation. It does use a standard ATX power supply with no alteration. While it's I/O ports are differently arranged, they conform with the ATX standard in the same way that the S900 does, so they all fit within a rectangle designated for individualistic I/O ports. One can pop out that rectangle of metal with holes, which is called the I/O gasket or the EMI shield, depending on to whom you're talking, and install one for the PTP board. This isn't possible with the 9500/9600 because it's I/O ports do not fall within that rectangle.

I put up a template for the PTP some time ago-- <http://www.io.com/~trag/PTP_to_ATX.sea.hqx> I think has both the template and some brief instructions on using the template. It's basically a sheet metal and dremel job.
