Actually, there is backwards compatability - HFS+ can read HFS. But HFS can not read HFS+ [both as you stated]. What that means is there is no forwards compatiablity. HFS was created before HFS+, so it doesn't know about future versions of the filesystem. But HFS+ does know and understand HFS just fine.
