That is a 13w3 connector. Common on high end workstation monitors (Sgi,
Sun, NeXT). The serial port is probably for some kind of test set or
color matching control. Sounds like a prepress monitor of some sort.
There are 13w3 to D15 cables around.

the monitor also has a round mac serial port on the back. what is

it also has a power manager switch, and a switch for separate H&V,
composite H&V, and sync on green. ( i understand what these do, just
including for complete info.)
