Thanks to all who sent suggestions; they didn't work for me (isn't it
funny how these old machines all seem to have their own
personalities?), but they're much appreciated.
When I dug out the instructions for the Sonnet CPU, I found that they
actually do warn you not to reset PRAM from a cold start, as it will
reset open firmware needed for the new CPU to be recognized. They even
include a floppy that you're supposed to be able to boot from if you do
mess things up, but I wasn't able to start-up from it. So I finally
went back to the beginning: put the original CPU back in, reinstalled
the Sonnet software, and then reinstalled the Sonnet CPU. A lot of
bother, but it worked.
So: be VERY cautious with resetting PRAM, and keep that old CPU card
around!
Thanks again,
Eric
