Jeff, I'm not sure what it ran when I first put the card in. The instructions
are to put the card
in then load the software. The literature says not to go by Apple System
Profiler (which, by the
way, recorded the speed as 557 MHz) because it will not be accurate... to rely
solely on CPU
Director. The card is supposed to boot up at a minimum of 800 MHz and then you
adjust it from
there. Since I couldn't get card and software to work together I have no idea
what the actual
speed was. (As an aside, I thought it was a little dubious to discover this
only after I bought
the product. I realize that may be a minor point but I still didn't like it. I
was paying for a
Gigaherz card, not an 800 MHz card that could do a Gig if you really wanted it
to.) And I know I
read somewhere in the manual/ReadMe/web site that for some reason the J700/S900
would actually
boot even lower than the 800 MHz but could still be corrected with CPUD. But
for the life of me, I
can't find where I read it.

Well, my machine would lock up/bomb at CPUD launch with and without the new
card. Then lock up
further in the launch process after a clean install. My second S900 launched
the software the with
my old processer installed, but I got the black screen with the new card. Does
that qualify as a
CPU crash? I know you can get a black screen if the card is not properly
seated, but I reseated it
several times and only got the black screen.

>Oh, have you tried it with your PCI cards (except video, of course) pulled?

No, I hadn't thought of that. But the second machine only has one other card, a
USB card.

They say the pioneers take the arrows :-)

My "logix" for buying this was that I was moving toward a G5 later this year. I
had paid off my
credit card (first zero balance since 1998) and was saving along those lines
when Jobs announced
the intel chip move for 2006. I get a couple Small Dog Electronics newsletters,
and though I did
not read the article, one headline I reacall was that current software will not
work with the
intelliMacs. When I upgrade, it will have to be everything. I use my S900 often
for freelance
design work. I use Quark, Illustrator and Photoshop a bunch. None of those are
cheap. Plus I need
a postscript printer and HP has not made a patch to OS X for my 1220/ps. A
friend has the
identical printer and found a patch from someone in Germany but it cost him
around $300. So when I
go to a new machine and OS X it's gonna cost me.

That's why this card was so attractive. I thought it could tide me over until
then. I didn't want
to go the Mini route because, by the time you add enough RAM for what I do and
a keyboard and
mouse and perhaps a nifty new LCD, your spending around $900 anyway. Plus your
stuck with a hard
drive that only spins at 4200 RPM, not 7200.

This card will have to go back. As far as returning it for a new one, I haven't
decided yet. I'll
have to sleep on it. My old PL G3/400 is an excellent card, just slow for what
I've been making it
do this year. I think I read here once that Will S. was of the opiniopn that
PowerLogix' quality
had slipped recently. My experience may be bearing that out.

If I get an exchange, I'll keep the list posted.
