I doubt that there's a problem using those versions.
My home network is regularly running 2 OS 9.1
computers and one each with Jag and either Panther or
Tiger. (that's my son's machine.) While I guess I
haven't really tried all of them, I have at least 40
Macs all the way back to the Plus, and I consider them
ALL networkable. Even those without network cards.

On the 8.6 machine you need to turn on AppleTalk and
File Sharing. Make sure that you are using the
ethernet port for file sharing because the default is
probably the printer port. (Whenever you zap the PRAM,
you'll have to go in and reset this or you'll lose the
network.) You'll also have to chose the volume you
want to share and who you want to share it with.

On the OS X machine, make sure that you have AppleTalk
turned on. I think it's off by default. It's in the
Network area of the System Preferences. You'll also
need to make sure you've selected the correct port -
probably builtin ethernet. In "sharing" preferences,
you'll probably need at least Personal File Sharing
and remote login on. You can also turn on printer
sharing if you have one you want to share.

If any of this sounds strange or you can't find
something, ask. I assume I'll be able to find what
you're looking for on my son's machine if things
aren't in the same place on my Jag computer
