Have you tried to enable STARTTLS under
Mail&Newsgroup Preferences => Server-Settings => Security ?
(freely translated, have a look for similar sounding options please)
Just to clear up the path:
Edit>>Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings>>Outgoing Server
Select the server in question, then click the Edit button. Drop down
Connection Security.
