Wasn't SM saving a draft in fact? (Which could be long if you included remote images.) I noticed that draft saving interrupts keyboard output to the compose window (but keypresses are saved and restored as soon as saving is done).

Hard to know, because the dialog text is exactly the same. If you trust it to save the draft instead of sending, you can tell it to go ahead, but I usually hit "Cancel" because I just can't be sure.

It comes up a lot for me because I often compose messages with characters in funny languages (Russian, mostly, but some others, too) and SeaMonkey offers to send in Unicode instead of my default Western encoding. It does exactly the same thing when saving a draft -- it asks whether I should "send in Unicode" when actually it's just saving (in Unicode, I assume).

My initial reaction was "this is a real PITA" to be nagged every *&^%(*& five minutes to save my draft, but at the moment I think it's a useful safety measure in case of a crash or hang. I may go back to thinking it's a PITA, though, and in that case I'll disable the autosave feature.
