Philip Chee already stated in this thread [1], that not adding grippies was intentional, because it didn't conform to Apple's human interface guidelines [2].

And I still don't recall any "mass outrage". Which news server was that? Which newsgroup?

If they are "guidelines" then that doesn't imply that one has to follow them "to the letter". Particularly if a feature is being provided by third party, and is one that users are clamoring for and favor...I would think that philosophy would be at the root of Apple's nod in favor of open sourceware.
