That's actually the better solution.
In most cases, you can grab the splitter and drag it, so most of the
time the grippies are not really needed. However, in Rufus' example of
the sidebar, the sidebar won't close all the way doing that.

...unless you're working on a laptop with a trackpad - then not having
grippies/snap-on-click is seriously annoying.
Won't close or open - I have to drag for open/close. And as mentioned,
the splitter bar is too narrow to get a...wait for it - grip on - with a
trackpad. Particularly the gesturing trackpad...I get all sorts of
mis-clicks and frustration just trying to get the cursor on it, let
alone drag it...
