Back in the days of IE/OE on Mac I hated it. And I was sad to see Mozilla go to that Model.
The goal was/is to boost the development of the Mozilla platform, the technologies behind, where the browser is the primary driving force. Focusing on another specific application which doesn't have such good support (read, there's no that many people interested and having time to develop, maintain, and catch up with the main platform) just holds the main development off. I'm glad SeaMonkey is providing some balance to that matter.
