The code got better overall with getting rid of some old code, and there's a few more rewrites underway to make things more consistent and reduce awkward and badly documented parts in the code. We have a really large code base overall in Mozilla though, so such cleanups always take a lot of time. Still, depending on what you did look at, chances are that 2.x code already looks a lot better than 1.x code did.
