Yep, I'm sure I've mumbled similar sentiments!!
Well, packets that have already been requested and sent could be en
route after you navigate away from that page, so on receiving them I
suppose the browser would discard them, but that doesn't prevent them
from arriving.
If the browser sends some sort of "never mind" message to the website,
the site could stop sending, but that wouldn't do anything about packets
already sent, right? They're still out there in cyberspace looking for a
home...
