I would not do that. I never have any software update automatically. I
want to control what gets updated and when it happens.
I can see why you would not, I used to be like that too. I wanted
control and to be in charge of what was going on with my computer. After
my last malware attack and a weekend of cleaning, I discovered that one
chink in the armor was not having all the latest updates for Java, among
others. I had gotten behind in agreeing to the updates. Many of them
are security related. Now, I am just too busy to be assessing and
installing updates for all the OS, software, its components, antivirus
anymore and need to have it done automatically.
So thanks for your input.
Anyone know where I can find the Java control panel so I can select
auto-updates? A google search says Control Panel>Java but I do not see
it there.
On my WinXP machine, if you go to Control Panel and open "Java" you get
a dialog with several tabs, the second one is "Update." It doesn't
appear as a separate application under "Java."
First you see a drop-down list:
Notify Me: Before downloading/Before installing
The first option means it checks for updates automatically but prompts
before downloading; the second option means it checks and downloads
automatically but prompts before installing.
Then you have a checkbox:
[ ] Check for Updates Automatically
And there's an [Advanced] button, and finally at the bottom there's an
[Update Now] button, and a notice that "Java Update was last run at h:mm
AM/PM on m/d/yy."
Under the [Advanced] button, we find:
Select how often and when you want the scan to occur.
( ) Daily
( ) Weekly
(•) Monthly
And there's a selector for the day of the month or week and/or time of
day, which I won't attempt to reproduce here. The default is 3:00 AM the
first day of every month.
And of course the [Advanced] dialog ends with [OK] and [Cancel] buttons.
