Yes, he said that was the gateway he came through, not news.mozilla.org which I use.
I'm still working on pining this down, but if you look at: /usr/share/gnome-control-center/gnome-default-applications.xml you'll find that the<mail-readers> sections in that file has this set for:

Either way I still think that the issue comes back to the desktop environment rather than SeaMonkey
Which I will try to recreate on the latest Gnome, and if the problem still exists open a bug directly with Gnome.
