It is presentational style - the content is not modified. Also, the
presentation is such that is doesn't change the content meaning as
with "J" -> "☺".
Note also, this presentational style is not "forced" by the sender, but
is chosen by the client (you). You know, you may choose to not display
recognized plain text emoticons as graphics:

It would be interesting to have:
