Wrong.
But I guess you're saying it means, "Only check for new mail after
Mail& Newsgroups has been opened at least once in this session." In
which case, it's working as intended; if I need to leave a browser
window open without having SM download email all night, I need to exit
SM entirely, then open just a browser window.
This is correct. Putting the complete and exact meaning into the
checkbox label is hard; what we have is a compromise. But if you didn't
understand it, you could just have clicked the Help button and read the
full explanation.
A little awkward, but if I can remember that sequence, it would work
for me.
Another possible option is to temporarily go to Offline mode, e.g. using
the connector icon on the status bar. This will delay and network
activity, including MailNews downloads, until after you go back on-line.
