Photos taken with the iPhone upside-down or sideways are automatically reoriented when displayed by the iPhone. There is a flag in the image file that indicates the orientation of the iPhone when the photo was taken and a sensor in the iPhone that indicates the current orientation. There has been much debate about whether to reorient photos in TBird and SeaMonkey's mail-news according the the flag.
