one. Some software checks and some doesn't. Sometimes software will
appear to install (like this one) then not run.

Yes I've now followed Daniel's advice & gone back to 2.9.1 which has
retained all my settings , bookmarks etc. and unticked auto update but I
think, like Firefox it should have warned me about my OS rather than
installing and then not working
