since CTL-A is not highlighting anything then CTL-C doesn't work
even SELECT ALL ( using Edit option) doesn't do anything either
is it SM or maybe my keyboard ?

Umm, try CTRL-C. If you highlight text and click the Edit menu you'll
see that Copy uses that key combination.
