here's an update
I still have SM 1.x ( latest version that was available)
used COMPOSER, and CTL-A works, both via keyboard as well
as by using the SM EDIT option
is anyone else having this problem ?
at least I now know it's NOT my keyboard at fault

Umm, try CTRL-C. If you highlight text and click the Edit menu you'll
see that Copy uses that key combination.
