Based on what I'm seeing, there seems to be no way to delete a message
from the hard drive, as you might want to do if the date is wrong and
the message would keep reappearing at the top of the thread until, say,
2019.

In my setup, the delete button is grayed out in the edit drop down menu
when you select a message in the thread pane, and there is no option
listed on the toolbar, including the stored buttons. Same situation when
the message in question is opened.

So you download newsgroup messages for offline viewing, and have no way
of deleting those messages from the hard drive?

If you mean newsgroup messages *not* downloaded for offline viewing,
then that is the default behavior.

You can change it by toggling "news.allow_delete_with_no_undo" in
about:config.

Not sure that is what you are talking about.

Making use of offline storage is real rarity for me. I just want the thread pane, which I organize by initial date of thread, newest first, to reflect what's happening chronologically.

The about:config item you noted solved the problem nicely. Thanks
