Actually, it can be automatic. Edit/Preferences/Mail & Newsgroups/Message Display Tick the box that says "Automatically mark messages as read" and choose your preferences below accordingly. I set mine to turn to "read" after 1 second. It has been that way a long time, but I think I remember the original default being 3 seconds. The "read" column is a bit of a misnomer; the green dot actually marks the message as UNread. To Paul Gallagher: Making the "Read" and "Junk Status" columns gives a few benefits beyond simply seeing the message status. First, there's easy sorting, of course. Just click on the column header and all your unread messages will bunch together at one end. I find this useful when there's a few unread messages lost among the rest.
